Alberta North is rich in wilderness and history. There are grandiose lakes, pristine beaches, meandering rivers, and boreal forests and plains - all of which are lovely settings for Alberta Bed and Breakfasts. Traverse the region by car or boat, on foot, skis, bicycle or ATV. Fish the Mighty Peace. Swim in the warm waters of Big Lake Country. Experience the nighttime sky as you never have before.
Wood Buffalo National Park is an important destination in Alberta North. It is open to visitors year-round, with extended hours from the end of May to Labour Day in September. The Visitor Reception Centres are excellent sources of information. Here you'll learn about paddling on relaxing lakes or options for more adventurous, backcountry canoeing. Plan an easy day hike or a rigorous overnight trip. In the winter, don your cross-country skis or snow shoes and head out into the still wilderness. Remember to stay up late in order to see the Aurora Borealis. Look for wild Wood Buffalo, wolves, snowshoe hares and lynx while in the park, but don't be surprised if you only catch a glimpse or two. One of the most magnificent aspects of Wood Buffalo National Park is that the animals that make their homes there are truly wild, and therefore elusive.
A surprising number of towns and hamlets are to be found in sparsely populated Alberta North - reminders of the early pioneers, trappers, explorers and hunters who made their way into this untamed region. Look for one-of-a-kind cafes, restaurants and shops when you pull into town - you may just find a gem.
Grande Prairie, in the northwest, is the largest city between Edmonton and Fairbanks, Alaska. It is surrounded by prairie lands on three sides - with boreal forest to the south - and served as a base for the pioneers who came to settle the plains.
Fort McMurray is perhaps the best place to see the colourful, dancing northern lights of the Aurora Borealis in Alberta - especially during the winter months. They will make you believe in things you've always doubted.
Alberta North Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers are a wonderful source of information about their region. Don't hesitate to ask them about their favorite spots and activities.
