Edmonton is the capital of Alberta. It is situated on the North Saskatchewan River, and is surrounded by some of the most fertile farmland on the prairies. The river valley is comprised of one urban park after another, giving Edmonton more parkland per capita than any other Canadian city. This is a green city, filled with lakes and ravines. It is easily explored on foot or bike, thanks in part to the Waskahegan Trail, which runs over 300 km through and around Edmonton.
There is much to do in Edmonton, which goes by the moniker "The festival City." More than thirty festivals fill the calendar throughout the year. The Local Heroes International Screen Festival is a fun way to spend a week in March; the Edmonton Chante celebrates French songs and culture, while the Improvaganza celebrates improvised comedy; Capital Ex (formerly Klondike Days) is a ten-day long goldrush celebration; and the Edmonton International Fringe Festival is one of the largest of its kind in the world (second only to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival). In short, if something sounds interesting, there is probably a festival for it in Edmonton, Alberta.
Yes, the Arts reign supreme in Edmonton. The downtown Arts District is built around Churchill Square, and is an area of concert halls, theatres and live music venues. In addition, there are over seventy museums in Edmonton, the largest and most impressive of which are the Royal Alberta Museum and the Art Gallery of Alberta.
Fort Edmonton Park is the largest Living History museum in Canada. Ride in horse-drawn carriages or a steam train. Speak with a fur trapper or an early settler to learn what life what like for them. See history brought to life.
Don't forget to ask your Edmonton Bed and Breakfast innkeepers what they like to do in their hometown.
